Pine Pixies Pre-School Yuletide fun

Pine Pixies Pre-School in Formby recently held their Christmas party. The children had lots of fun playing party games.

We have quite a few two year olds at present so 'pass the parcel' may have been a little challenging to some, not to rip all the papers off at once. So we improvised the game to 'pass the teddy' instead with a lucky dip prize each time. There was plenty of party food to go around, then it was time for parents to join us for their singalong.

At the end of the party Santa turned up to sit in his grotto and speak to all the parents and children with some presents. The event was enjoyed by all.

Tesco fine could lead to child safeguarding issue

Would you like Tesco staff taking photographs of your child?

Tesco have recently announced that they are introducing a scheme to stop motorists from parking in disabled bays at their stores.

Shoppers who park in bays meant for the disabled and parents with young children could face fines of up to £70 under a crackdown by Tesco.

The supermarket chain has stated that it has armed staff at 81 of its stores with a special smartphone app to record evidence.

The scheme will be rolled out to 200 more locations over the next few weeks in Tesco’s first ever enforcement action against drivers who break the rules.

Staff will use the app to take pictures of vehicles parked in disabled bays without Blue Badges or hogging the spaces set aside for parents with children under 12.

Now to some this may be a great opportunity to ensure drivers in the wrong spaces get their just deserts. However, as a parent myself and Safeguarding Person for my nursery, the scheme is very frightening and worrying. Parents need to be aware and this is why...
  • Tesco are seemingly arming staff members with an internet device to photograph parents using their parking bays. Do these staff members have current DBS and background checks?
  • What policy/procedures have Tesco management put into place in order that these photographs will not be downloaded for other purposes?
  • What policy/procedures have Tesco management put into place to safeguard their staff members being accused of taking unlawful pictures of children?
  • Is it specific phones that Tesco are buying for their staff members, or are they allowing them to use their own personal mobile phones for this purpose? The thought is frightening if the latter.
  • It seems they are intending to photograph parents using the bays with children over 12 years of age.  Does that mean if we shop at Tesco we have to prove our child's age before we park at these bays?
  • Another point is that sometimes older children may have a hidden disability such as Asperger's Syndrome or other. For the safety of other cars it may be beneficial to be able to park in a wider bay sometimes, in order that the child does not open the car door repeatedly and hit the adjacent car. So are they being discriminated against? Trying to handle a child having an ASD meltdown in a narrow car parking space is not easy.
  • The evidence is going to be apparently sent to a company called Horizon Parking, which obtains driver details from the DVLA and issues a £40 penalty notice, rising to £70 unless it is paid within 14 days. Are the photographs taken by Tesco staff sent in a confidential way to Horizon Parking and do they hold DBS checks on their staff?

I do fully understand the annoyance of people misusing these bays, however I think the solution Tesco have come up with is dangerous. If I was to see an alleged Tesco staff member taking a photograph of my child, I would be extremely angry and refuse to let them have it on any mobile device.

I seriously think that Tesco should just concentrate on enforcing their scheme on Disabled Parking Bays and forget the parent ones.

Pine Pixies Pre-School

At Pine Pixies Pre-School our children have been settling into their new term. Lots of fun has been found with their new mud kitchen and they have made their outside play house into a stable, with sawdust and straw from the local pet shop. Inside they have been experimenting with making various types of playdough, baking cakes and hand painting.

Since September 2016 we have changed our planning techniques and recording to ‘In the moment planning’. This we feel will ensure the setting is more child-led.

We have completely re-structured our way of storing our equipment in order to ensure the children are given more free choice during play. This we hope will give a more enabling environment and will allow the children to explore and investigate through their play.

This system will also bring our parents into our planning structure and allow them a more in-depth sight into their child’s nursery life.

There are lots of opportunities and plenty of space to play with a friend or take some time out for quieter activities.

If you would like your child to attend our pre-school
we do have places now available.

We are based at St Luke’s Parish Hall, Kirklake Road, Formby L37 2DB

Transition to school

Transition to school

From Cath Regan of Pine Pixies Pre-School.

It is now the start of the April school term. This is the period when the last educational records and assessments are finalised for those moving to a different school.

All of the school reception teachers are busy making their way into pre-schools and nurseries in order to meet the children, who will be moving on to their first day at 'big' school.

It is very important, we believe, for those teachers to see the children in their familiar environment and meet them. It gives them and the children an important start to the beginnings of the relationship to follow in the forthcoming September.

It is also the time when older children are preparing for their transition from primary school to high school. Some children, no matter what their age, will find the move more daunting than others and will need an 'enhanced transition' with more in place than the usual one.

For older pupils needing an enhanced transition they will probably visit the school one day a week throughout the last half term, so that they feel more a part of the new school when they move across in September.

My son when moving to Formby High had a fantastic transition, they even put activities in place over the holidays and carried on the transition almost throughout year 7. This sort of transition process is very important and much appreciated by families.

At Pine Pixies Pre-School we work closely with other schools, in order to ensure each child is as ready as they can be and that the school has all the information they need to carry on the work we have done with them. Most of the schools in Formby work closely with us.

At Pine Pixies, transitions started a long time ago with teachers coming into our setting and us going to them on visits.

We helped to support parents, 'when needed', with school choices and we do 'enhanced transitions' too when required.

When we have a confirmed list of children, going to whatever school, we will put it up in our setting to help parents to get to know each other, which then in turn helps children with their transition.

In our role play area, we will have uniforms to dress up in and a book of photographs from their school with pictures of their teachers and the different areas within the school.

If your child is moving on this July, what transitions are in place?

I believe Formby childcare and Formby schools give a very rich service to families in this area, second to none.

Pine Pixies do have places available for September, so please do put your child's name down now to reserve a place.

Addendum:

Comment from Martine Platt, Co Manager and SENCO at Pine Pixies...

"Transitions are really important and need to run smoothly. Not only when  our children first start at our setting but when they go off to 'big'school. It is always sad to see our children leave, but also a happy time to see them just fit in to school life. Children are unaware that they are getting ready for the transition right through pre school life, be it emotionally or physically ready. This is why we work very closely with our local schools. Reception teachers and pre-schools  attend regular hub meetings, which I find invaluable to make sure we are all working together and work out what is best for our children. Also trips to local schools and teachers coming in to our setting, to watch them play or read them a story so the children are used to seeing familiar faces or surroundings. Not only is it our job to support children through transitions, but we must not forget our parents. With support and reassurance, parents can get through this time as well, hopefully as easily as the children do."

World Down Syndrome Day

Monday 21 March 2016 marks the 11th anniversary of World Down Syndrome Day.

Cath Regan

One of the tests I had whilst pregnant some years ago, showed that our baby was probably going to be born with Down Syndrome. After receiving the results I was advised there and then to have a termination.

I went to the library and read EVERYTHING I could find. My husband and I spoke to our other children and we all agreed as a family that termination was something which was definitely NOT an option and no 'professional' would tell me otherwise.

I put the whole issue out of my mind, excitedly preparing for my daughter's birth, until the moment she was born and placed in my arms. No condition she had or didn't have could have stopped the love we felt for her.

"The only disability in life is a bad attitude."
Scott Hamilton

She doesn't have Down Syndrome as it happens, but she feels very close to the anniversary today. I do wonder though how many beautiful children (with or without Down Syndrome) would be here today if their mother had not been as strong and gone 'against the system'.

Update of child immunisation data recording

by

Cath Regan

I recently reported my concerns on my GP not being given the immunisation information on my child since 2005. A meeting was held on 22nd February by various health bodies, discussing the concerns raised by myself.

The outcome of this meeting was that all child immunisation information backdated from 2011 to present day is now going to be sent over to GPs.  All the October 2015 flu immunisation information will also be sent in this way. There will now be a weekly coded electronic record being sent across from the Liverpool Community Health to all GPs, to keep their patient records fully updated. I believe this has already begun.

Liverpool Community Health (LCH) and the NHS Liverpool Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) are working together to ensure good practice continues in this area.

NB. I am informed that the CCGs concerned are South Sefton CCG and Southport and Formby CCG in this instance.

LCH will contact the CCG in order to discuss the management of historical data from 2011 onwards.

A representative from the NHS said that I had identified gaps in the recording of data.

As a parent I am very pleased with this outcome and believe there is now a more robust system in place, not to mention the dealing of backdated information to ensure the safe recording for patients.

The statement below is from the Liverpool Community Health NHS Trust, who I would like to thank for their cooperation in this matter.

"All immunisation history is recorded, held safely and accurately by Liverpool Community Health NHS Trust (LCH) and that if parents require access to this that are very welcome to contact the Child Health Information Service on 0151 295 3575  to request this information.

It is best practice that this information  is also  documented at the GP  practice. LCH have established improved systems of undertaking this and a weekly report will be going electronically to GP practices to inform them of this information.

LCH will discuss with the CCG and Sefton practices regarding the management of  historical data in order to ensure that GP practices are in possession of all immunisation information since the establishment of LCH as an organisation in 2011. "

Flowers for Brookdale Resource Centre

Brookdale Resource Centre

Day care service for older people with Alzheimer's and Dementia

Valentine's Day may have passed, but those recently attending the Brookdale Centre in Ainsdale had flowers galore provided for them by Sainsbury's Lord Street branch in Southport.

The flowers were warmly accepted and thanks were expressed to Sainsbury's by both the Manager and Friend's group member, Cath Regan, on behalf of Centre members.

Sainsbury's representative Nicky Plaistow, who together with Brenda Porter, organised the surprise delivery, expressed her delight that the flowers had brought so much pleasure.

"The intention", said Nicky, "was that each person attending the Centre would receive a bunch of flowers and we are pleased this is exactly what happened".

Above: Cath Regan (left) with some of those receiving flowers on the day at the Brookdale.

Background on the Friends of Brookdale and the campaign to save this much needed service

Brookdale Resource Centre is situated in Sandbrook Road, Ainsdale, Southport.

It is the only Dementia specialist care centre in a catchment area of approximately 150,000 people.

The council proposed to close it and move everybody across to another centre. A group was formed (Friends of Brookdale) to save the centre. After a strong and emotional campaign, the centre was saved in March 2015.

Friends of Brookdale Facebook page.

Above: Friends of Brookdale celebrating after the successful campaign to retain the Centre.

This unit with specialist trained staff provides a day care service for older people with Alzheimer's and Dementia and deals with cases from early onset to the later stages of the illness. It provides a vital life-line for carers giving them the required respite whilst being assured of the safety, health and well-being of their loved ones at the centre.

On 23rd June 2015 a meeting was held by the Friends of Brookdale group with Cllr Paul Cummins; also in attendance was Marcus Roberts from Sefton Council. Many questions were raised by the carers present.

However it is now February 2016 and promised improvements to this essential service appear to currently be nonexistent.

Cllr Cummins confirmed  back in June 2015 that money was available for the improvements needed, such as car park resurfacing and structural improvements. He stated that the council had a commitment to carers’ involvement in any changes/improvements and that we would work together on this.

Carers stated that concerns over referrals were slow to come through and that some professional agencies were not telling people in need about the service offered by Brookdale. Road signage was required and marketing was needed to ensure this essential service was easily found by people.

Cllr Cummins listened and promised to look into the problems faced.

It was stated that in order to develop Brookdale to ensure the delivery of care stays excellent, Sefton needed to look into training needs, physical structure and referral rates.

Friends of Brookdale also met on Thursday 27th August 2015 with Penelope Fell, Chief Operating Officer and Dave Hughes, Business Development Officer from New Directions.

Many items were discussed including the promotion and organisation of the services offered, quality of care, referrals and the lack of information sometimes from Health and Social Care.

Discussions began with the background of the Friends of Brookdale, which led into how carers found difficulties in balancing caring for a family member whilst working at the same time. Many relatives had needed to give up work in order to manage, which ultimately led to businesses being affected.

Relatives stated how the quality of care in nursing homes fluctuated greatly and how it was all down to the staff and continuity of care, which made the most difference.

The relatives present at the meeting stated that they found Brookdale by accident, Social Services and from the advice of nurses.

There seemed to be a total lack of information forthcoming from Health and Social Care. Ms Fell had spoken to the Council re referrals, but the Council seemed to not be aware of any problem.

CALL FOR: CHILDREN'S UNIT AND ADDITIONAL DEMENTIA SERVICES FOR AINSDALE,SOUTHPORT

The area close to where the Brookdale is situated is in an appalling  state of repair.

The Sandbrook Way issues have been well reported in the press of late, due to run down buildings and discussions to improve them falling through.

Due to this I started a petition to improve the area and extend the wonderful Brookdale Resource Centre. We already have over one hundred signatures on this.

Please click this link below and sign to show your support, for this area becoming an area for health and well being.

Here are my thoughts:
  • The proposals put forward up to now have been a supermarket. Do we REALLY need another supermarket and in such a close locality to Ainsdale Village?
  • By extending the services already offered by the Brookdale, it can give much more support to families and possibly offer longer care. Maybe even overnight care.
  • Southport lost it's children's A & E services back in 2003. We need to get urgent care services back for the families. Ormskirk is too far away.
  • Ainsdale is the prime situation for these health services, as it stands central to Formby, Southport, Crossens and Hesketh Bank.
  • This is a large area and could hold all the much needed vital services that would help all ages.
  • We already have a large Health and Wellbeing Centre (which I think is currently underused) and Dementia specialist care centre.
  • If my proposals were taken seriously, then the effect on families would be groundbreaking and extremely positive for our whole community.

Child health concerns

Children's medical records - are they up to date?

By Cath Regan

Above: Cath Regan (right) with Lynne Thompson, Lib Dem Chair.

I recently questioned  when one of my children last had a tetanus jab.

The GP surgery checked for me and they had no more jabs recorded since 2005. They suggested I check with school. I eventually found out that my child had indeed received one at school since that date, but whilst this had been recorded correctly at the school end, it had not been added to my child's medical file at the GP surgery.

Unrecorded immunisations

I have now discovered that my child had indeed been given four immunisations, which were all not recorded on her GP records. Asking around other parents, I found out that young children who had received the flu vaccine at school, also had not had the information entered onto their GP files.

This is a serious matter as children could be receiving too many injections if not correctly recorded.

GP's cannot ensure that correct immune systems are in place in communities for halting the spread of infection, if recording is not done and shared between the health agencies in a confidential manner.

One parent commented; "My child attends St Patrick's primary school in Southport. A friend made me aware of the current situation and I know my child had a flu vaccination in school recently, so I called my GP who informed me that his last vaccination was back in 2014. Is the current system not working.... is it not linked on one system?"

It seems that the Liverpool Community Health is responsible for keeping all this data, so are they also responsible for ensuring it is passed on to the GP records? If not then why are parents not being told to inform the GP themselves each time their child is immunized?
Speaking to a person from the school nursing system, I was told that they also were unaware of this absent data. I have phoned them a number of times, but so far nobody else has come back to me on this matter.

The Liverpool Community Health, NHS Trust website has these comments on their immunisation and vaccinations:

Liaison

The Vaccination and immunisation service liaises with other services who are also involved with the immunisation process.

Child Health Recording mechanisms
Data analysts to monitor vaccine uptake
Medicines management re storage of vaccines
Public Health England for the management of outbreaks of disease

Management of Disease Outbreak

Communicating awareness of disease outbreaks to all relevant staff
Dispensing immediate advice/action to be taken in clinical areas during an outbreak
Developing strategies for mass immunisation
Co-ordinating/staffing emergency clinics to contain outbreaks
Ensuring front line staff  have received relevant vaccine
Reflect on lessons learned and formulate preparedness plans

Alongside the Flu co-ordinator project manager, the V&I Service is involved with the planning, training delivery and implementation of the annual staff flu programme

Planning meetings for the flu season
Taking designated action on the flu plan
Ensure promotional materials distributed and displayed
Mentoring of new immunisers during the flu season
Vaccinating staff on/off site to ensure flexibility and availability of vaccination
Ensuring prompt return of data to analysts

Positive contribution towards Department of Health staff flu targets

I would assume from the above comments that something is going wrong with their implementation of these actions.

My child attends high school, the other child attends a primary school so just how far reaching is this problem?

Southport Lib Dem Chair, Lynne Thompson, is concerned that this may not just be a problem for selected Southport schools. She has asked John Pugh MP to check with the Ministry for Health and NHS England as to whether GPs throughout England are getting the proper information which they require as to which of their child patients have had which vaccinations at school.

"Nowadays, you would expect this information to be routinely transferred to the GP surgeries instantaneously by internet file transfer the moment the vaccinations in school are completed," she says.

Councillor Tony Dawson, Southport's local NHS spokesperson says,

"It is highly confusing for children, parents and doctors alike and a complete waste of resources if family doctors are setting out to duplicate what has already been done in schools. I have asked the local Care Commissioning Group to look into this as a matter of some urgency."

So what should parents do?

Parents need to ensure that their child's GP records are up to date with the vaccinations they have been given at school. The school nurse should be able to obtain a copy of  all up to date vaccinations, so that parents can give a copy to their GP to check if their data is correct.

I should hope that the Liverpool Community Health run an investigation into finding out where the breakdown in data sharing has happened. Surely all school nurses can be given a date stamped card to pass on to all parents to give to their GP service as immunisations happen?

My GP service said I would need to give them the letter I have obtained from the school nurse re my daughter, before they can update her file. Therefore parents do require something in writing.
