Pine Pixies Pre-School Yuletide fun

Pine Pixies Pre-School in Formby recently held their Christmas party and who better as the secret visitor but Santa himself.

Parents, children and staff joined together in singing a few Xmas melodies before Santa joined them to present gifts to each child.

The children had earlier had a party with dancing and party food. After a play in the garden with bubbles and a hunt the santa game, it was time for a story on the carpet, then for parents to arrive.

A raffle was held which thanks to kind parents made a profit of £30 which we have used to buy a new craft tablecloth and a new kitchen trolley. Thanks to all involved, including those who donated gifts.

A VERY big thank you goes to our Santa who never forgets to visit us each Xmas party day. He is our hero!

A thank you also goes to our wonderful, caring staff team and our student, 'some of whom' we managed to photograph with Santa.

We currently have spaces available from January, please contact us for information.

Conservatives wrecking UK childcare

Southport's Conservative MP Damien Moore is seen above pretending to support small businesses, when in fact he is only supporting the ones which make him and his fellow Conservatives look and sound good.

The Conservatives have put a post onto their facebook boasting about how they have doubled FREE childcare up to 30 hours per week. This is a misleading farce that they are trying to get the families they serve to believe.

https://www.facebook.com/conservatives/photos/a.10154743534819279.1073741827.8807334278/10155549534364279/?type=3&fref=mentions

Yes childcare is doubled, no it is not free as they have only shifted the cost from the government's pocket to providers' pockets.

Comments from some providers regarding the Conservative post are:

"Nursery extinction, not nursery inclusion"

"The comments on there are ridiculous and uneducated".

"They are making preschools go bankrupt in the process"

The Conservatives say it is making life easier for hard working families. Providers are asking, what about the families of the people who work hard trying to run or work for an early years setting?

Many of these settings have had to close their doors for good after 30 years of providing outstanding childcare and support for families. The Conservatives are turning a blind eye to the truth.

The childcare sector is in danger of being lost in a sea of under funding. An underfunding that has gone on for years but the Conservative's 30 hours has finally put the nail in the coffin.

The idea of the 30 hours is great for families, but it has to be funded right, it has to be with workable policies for all concerned. By those concerned I include, childminders, nurseries, pre-schools all those who work in and provide early years' childcare. They are the ones who know the problems that the Conservative government's bad promises have made.

Instead they have their MPs sitting smiling on couches, talking about how important small businesses are or standing by a roadside discussing the colour of the tarmac.  All a cover to make voters think all is wonderful with the world.

Damien Moore posts on his page-

"UK Parliament Week is a wonderful opportunity to engage people from across the UK with Parliament and to explore what issues matter most to them.
It’s also a powerful tool which empowers people to get involved in politics and local campaigning."

When people have tried to engage with this particular MP they have reported that they have then been blocked from posting on his facebook pages.

The fault and the current childcare crisis lies solely with the Conservative government. The ways to immediately fix it have been shown to them over and over again by these groups and others; Champagne Nurseries on Lemonade Funding, National Day Nurseries Association and the Preschool Learning Alliance.

There is a huge campaign throughout the country to get the government to listen and put it right.

All they do is turn a blind eye and post incorrect information to the populace to misdirect their thinking.

Join with the groups mentioned here and help to show a strength of feeling. The Conservative government are letting down the future generation of children.

The group mentioned above Champagne Nurseries on Lemonade Funding (CNLF) ask this;

🍾🍋🍾🍋 WE NEED YOU!! 🍾🍋🍾🍋
Below is an open letter to the Chancellor, ahead of next weeks budget, imploring him to increase funding for early years as part of a wider reform of the legislation around ‘free’ childcare.
Tracy Brabin once again wants the issue of underfunding to be very high on the political agenda 👍👍
CNLF does not believe that simply increasing funding is the answer, it is impossible to know what the ‘right’ rate is as our costs vary so much, but increasing funding will give the sector some much needed stability as we continue to call for the regulations/legislation to be changed.
Can we please ask you to sign and share this letter, we need providers and parents to support this, we MUST get our voices heard #unitedwestand 🍾🍋THANK YOU 🍾🍋

Local childcare provider Catherine Regan who has run a childcare business for almost seventeen years, fully supports the campaign for better funding. She has in an earlier article, put out a request for Conservative MP Damien Moore, Labour MP Bill Esterson and local councillors to visit her setting, to find out the concerns facing the sector first hand. So far there have been no takers, what a quiet political world we live in when it is an issue they do not want to put their name to.

Open letter to the government and MPs

Government childcare provider terms not economically viable

https://www.nurseryworld.co.uk/nursery-world/news/1161591/robert-goodwill-named-the-new-children-and-families-minister

For a long time now we have heard and seen the problems facing childcare providers, childcare is at crisis level. Many many providers have closed their doors and still are.

WHY you ask? The reason is because the government refuse to pay providers the rate per child to ensure that ALL providers' businesses are sustainable.

In Sefton for instance, providers are being paid £4/hour per child, in other areas provides are getting less, but it costs providers approximately £5.50/£6 per hour in order to put that service into place.

The government are stating loudly to all parents that they are getting FREE funding, however it is not free because the providers are being forced to pay for the shortfall out of their own pockets.

If you went into a shop and only offered to pay for half of the goods in your basket because you had a voucher for 50% off, would the shop owner turn around and say they were happy to give you the rest of the items for free? I think not, but THAT is what the government are forcing providers to do.

The government have so far refused to put in any more money, so what is the solution you ask?

Well one solution is for the providers to ask parents to pay the top up charge of £1.50/hour, but this has been banned by the government, as they want to be seen as providing FREE funding, even if it means putting the childcare industry in crisis.

The Service Level Agreement in Sefton re funding states:
"It is not intended to cover the cost of meals, consumables, additional hours or additional services. The provider can charge for meals and snacks as part of a free entitlement place and they can also charge for consumables such as nappies or sun cream and for services such as trips and yoga.

These charges must be voluntary for the parent. Where parents are unable or unwilling to pay for meals and consumables, providers who choose to offer the free entitlements are responsible for setting their own policy on how to respond, with options including waiving or reducing the cost of meals and snacks or allowing parents to supply their own meals."

So then it could help for  providers to charge parents for all the 'consumables, snack etc which the funding does not cover. However the government refuse to take out the clause which states this is voluntary. So in the same sentence it states the provider CAN charge for these items, then it states these charges can only be VOLUNTARY.

Talk about contradiction!

Every part of the childcare sector works hard to ensure parents and their children are given the best possible service. They go above and beyond every day to meet the changing needs of the families they serve.

Due to the government many of these workers are still on £7.50/hour for a career they love doing and have spent a long time gaining qualifications for.

Due to the government many owners of these businesses cannot even take a personal wage, due to the shortage of funding paid by the government and the restrictions placed on their businesses.

It has been proven that the early years of a child's life before the age of eight, are the ones which see the most rapid phase of development and growth. These years are so important, as they give the foundations for self-esteem, moral outlook, social skills, cognitive skills and perception of the world.

Early Years educators should be more acknowledged by this government as they are setting the vital foundations for a balanced and cohesive society.

Every single childcare provider should refuse to accept the government's highly unbalanced and unfair  regulations on how we run our businesses. The government are treating the childcare sector badly and making childcare not economically viable.

It is time we all took control of how we run our businesses and say NO to the government's out of date proposals.

The low funding rates are government frozen now till 2020 at a rate too low to manage.
The Living Wage goes up, pensions have been set up by providers, the cost of supplies needed to run the business goes up, business rates rise constantly - the final cards have been played by many outstanding providers.

What is required urgently?

1. A call on all providers to stand together and shout a big loud NO and take back their say on how their businesses are run.

2. To the government-pay us a decent rate so we can be sustainable and/or take away the restraints you have put on us re charging for services and top up fees, then leave us alone to pick up the pieces you have shattered of this industry, before it is too late.

So to the government's children's minister Robert Goodwill, Bill Esterson MP, Damien Moore MP and all the other MP's who can join in the fight to put this right I ask

“What are you going to do next week to put this wrong right?

Are you going to right this terrible wrong or are you going to continue hiding under  the stones of ignorance, until there is no childcare left to offer UK families?”

Freshfield Children’s Centre meeting with Dwayne Johnson

Dwayne Johnson Director of Social Care & Health attended the presentation session at Freshfield Children’s Centre on Wednesday 1st November. Quite a few people turned up to listen and ask questions.

Mr Johnson stated that in 2011 centres sliced savings of 10-20% and now more savings were required.

The Talbot St building in Southport is being looked into as becoming a family and wellbeing centre. Concerns were raised by the group present that there is currently no car parking available and was too far from Formby to help some families.

Freshfield’s Centre is believed to be keeping some services but not the same range as now. The hours may be reduced and some services could be offered elsewhere, Farnborough Road in Birkdale and King’s Meadow in Ainsdale being two centres mentioned for services to be spread to.

The services will cover 0-19 year olds but teenagers and children’s services will be in separate areas.
Some centres mentioned as being main bases may be Talbot St, Netherton, Waterloo and Marie Clarke in Bootle with 8 or 9 complementary bases.

The consultation process is well under way to gain people’s views and then it goes to Cabinet on 7th December 2017 with recommendations.

It was stated by those attending that there are too many parenting courses being offered that did not meet the needs required. More targeted support needs to be offered.

Mental Health is on the rise and there seems to be a lack of provision in this area.

Dwayne Johnson said that cutbacks will include staffing.

Grandparents attending said they had received wonderful support through the centre and this needs to stay local, as they often collect siblings from Formby schools too.

One local pre-school owner attending, spoke of the invaluable support her families had received from the centre staff and those families could have been lost in the system had it not been for the staff being local.

It was felt that more networks and confidence building in mums and dads should be offered. Indeed there were two ladies from groups who networked/work with parents and they offered a lot of comments to the discussion.

It was seen as a weakness if all services were not offered under one roof to help people with various needs. It was also mentioned that other sites could become oversubscribed, which was potentially a danger that Mr Johnson was in agreement with.

Let's hope Freshfield School and governors are in agreement with the majority of many, to keep as many services as possible at their school site, as it has become the focus for help for many families.

Dwayne Johnson hopes to gain a lot more replies to the survey. Please find the survey here and have your say to future services:

Professional Babysitting Agency requires sitters

A call is being put out to all people who have a qualification to work with young children. Are you a teacher, childcare practitioner, childminder?

Do you need to earn some spare money to enhance your income?

I have worked in the childcare sector for seventeen years and I am starting a babysitting agency to ensure that parents have a choice of professional people to leave their children with, when requiring an evening out or needing emergency childcare in their home. Maybe you are staying for a holiday in this area so need childcare for a few hours.

I state this is babysitting and not a substitute for registered Childminders and others who are Ofsted registered.

My first step is to compile a list of qualified people who will have a portable DBS and at least one year experience working with children.

Are you interested then please email professionalbabysitting@mail.com

Alternatively, contact us on the Facebook page
https://www.facebook.com/Professional-Babysitting-Agency-1519841574776075/

Are you a parent who is interested in this service? If so please let me know and I can email you as soon as the agency is ready to start.

All babysitters will be interviewed, ID checked, hold a current and portable DBS and have references checked before going onto our database.

Childcare providers fight for better funding levels

A House of Commons debate on the 'effect of the 30 hours childcare funding' is to take place today.

The shadow minister for early years, Tracy Brabin, has confirmed that she will be attending the
debate, along with the Pre-School Learning Alliance, National Day Nurseries Association (NDNA), the Professional Association for Childcare and Early Years (PACEY), and members of the Champagne Nurseries, Lemonade Funding campaign group.

Ms Brabin said, 'Thursday’s debate gives us a great opportunity to hear from Minister Goodwill about how the 30 hours roll-out is going from the Government’s perspective.

'I have a list of concerns I’d like him to respond to, including the impact of levels of funding, the children not in a place and the discrepancies from local authority to local authority.

The team from Champagne Nurseries on Lemonade Funding (CNLF) will be attending Westminster to lobby the Minister of State for Children and Families, Robert Goodwill.

Not everybody who goes in support will be able to attend inside the Houses of Parliament but will meet afterwards at the very aptly named 'Sanctuary' pub where they hope to arrive at approximately 4.30pm after the debate.

Team CNLF and about 12 others will be there at the

Sanctuary Pub & Hotel
33 Tothill Street,
London,
SW1H 9LA

Formby childcare provider Catherine Regan from Pine Pixies Pre-School said

"The government are paying providers short. The amount providers are being paid per hour, per child is not enough to deliver high quality sustainable childcare and many settings across the country have already closed their doors. Childcare providers across the country from all types of settings, including nannies and childminders are strongly united in this fight for fairer funding to ensure their sustainability. Providers are refusing to allow the words 'Free Funding' on their literature, as it is not free when the very providers delivering this funded childcare are having to subsidise it themselves."

Hopefully, the debate today will make politicians see the problem providers face and make immediate changes to save more providers becoming unsustainable. The impact that the low funding levels are having on childcare as a whole is immense. The government are a disgrace in allowing the 30 hours childcare to be rolled out when it has not been organised properly for the good of all involved.

Catherine Regan owner of Pine Pixies Pre-School in Formby recently wrote to Cllr Nina Killen, Parliamentary Researcher, Bill Esterson MP (Sefton Central) on the subject of funding, this was Nina Killen's reply,

"Labour introduced free childcare hours for parents, which were fully funded and resourced. Under the Conservatives, the free hours entitlement is chronically under-funded, with provision patchy and hard to navigate. Many providers now simply refuse to participate in the scheme. The result is that many parents aren’t even getting the hours they’re entitled to. Labour would: 1. Overhaul the existing childcare system in which subsidies are given directly to parents who often struggle to use them, and transition to a system of high-quality childcare places in mixed environments with direct government subsidy. 2. Maintain current commitments on free hours and make significant capital investment during our first two years of government, to ensure that the places exist to meet demand. 3. Phase in subsidised provision on top of free-hour entitlements, to ensure that everyone has access to affordable childcare, no matter their working pattern. 4. Transition to a qualified, graduate-led workforce, by increasing staff wages and enhancing training opportunities. This will benefit staff, who are among our worst-paid workers, and improve child development. 5. Extend the 30 free hours to all two-year-olds, and move towards making some childcare available for one-year-olds and extending maternity pay to 12 months."

Catherine also wrote to the Southport MP Damien Moore and this was his response to the current crisis.

"To address your question regarding childcare funding, I can assure you that more support is being provided to families through record investment in childcare, rising from £5 billion to £6 billion by 2020. I hope that this, along with tax-free childcare, will make a real different to millions of hardworking families.

The Education Secretary has set out her plans to reform the way in which early years providers are funded, ensuring a much better deal for nurseries, preschools and childminders. The changes will create a fairer system that better provides the affordable, high-quality childcare families deserve.

I welcome that 93 per cent of early years providers are now rated as good or outstanding. Improving the quality of these providers and the skill of those who work with children is a top priority, and I know that Ministers continue to work hard to drive these standards higher still."

Left, Bill Esterson MP and Damien Moore MP

Catherine said

"Damien Moore has I believe misunderstood the reasons for providers' concerns. He is only seeing in his response the side of the families, but the families cannot have this childcare if there are no settings left to provide it due to the current under-funding crisis. "

Catherine would like to extend an invitation for these MPs to visit her setting and discuss the concerns she and others across the country are facing.  UK childcare is in deep crisis and it is up to politicians such as these above to get the problem sorted fast.

Childcare in England is grossly underfunded and many childcare settings and childminders have been forced into closure. Many of them rated as Outstanding by Ofsted.

If you have a family member or friend that uses childcare, or you work in childcare or schools then please help.

There is a 'very large' campaign to make the government listen and put in place 'urgent' changes to increase funding levels.
